GAME OF THE WEEK
Ohio State 44, North Carolina State 38 in 3OT’s. The Buckeyes just find ways to win. It isn't always pretty, but they are becoming escape artists under Jim Tressel. Philip Rivers led the Wolfpack back, but they came up a foot short in the third overtime.
TEAM OF THE WEEK
Michigan beat up on what was believed to be a pretty good Notre Dame team. The Wolverines established themselves as a national championship contender with the 38-0 win. Runner up: Georgia showed it may be the team to beat in the SEC with its 31-7 win over South Carolina.
UPSET OF THE WEEK
Not only did UNLV go into Madison and upset Wisconsin, the Rebels did so in impressive fashion. The Rebels used a ton of Badger turnovers to coast to a 23-5 win. Runner up: Unranked Washington State and Arkansas won on the road against quality Big 12 opponents. Washington State beat Colorado 47-26, while Arkansas stunned No. 5 Texas 38-28,
HUH?
Let me get this straight. You have a Heisman candidate quarterback, an injured running back and four chances from inside the five in overtime and you don't pass the ball? North Carolina State chose to go away from its strength, the arm of Philip Rivers, and run the ball three times with a chance to tie Ohio State in overtime. On both first and third down the Wolfpack ran Rivers up the middle and on fourth down it ran a toss to tailback T.A. McClendon who was icing an injured patella tendon just a few plays earlier.
WORST CALL BY AN OFFICIAL
USC scored a touchdown on what may have been one of the worst calls I have ever seen. The refs ruled that Hawaii’s fullback fumbled the ball on a quick out and USC’s Ronald Nunn scooped it up and raced 38 yards for the Southern Cal's first touchdown. Not only was it not a fumble, it was not a catch! Replays showed that the ball was bobbled and the receiver never really had possession. Even if he had possession, he tripped trying to hang on to it and the ball did not pop loose until AFTER he hit the ground. Although the call was costly, it hardly mattered as USC cruised to the 61-32 win.
WORST CALL BY AN ANNOUNCER
After a drop by Illinois Jamaal Clark, the ABC announcer said “He dropped it and he knows it.” You’d hope the receiver was conscious enough to know what happened just seconds before. Runner up: Not to pick on ABC, but the ABC color man in the Ohio State game said that the Buckeyes, who trailed by seven in overtime, needed a touchdown to get back into the game. Uh, no. They needed a score to STAY in the game. Had they failed to score they would have lost.
TOP PERFORMANCES
Jamaal Bremmer, SS, UNLV. Bremmer had two interceptions, a fumble return for a touchdown, 11 tackles and a pair of sacks in the Rebels’ 23-5 upset of Wisconsin.
Matt Kegal, QB, Washington State. 17-33 for 310 yards and three scores in Washington State’s upset win at Colorado.
Jason White, QB, Oklahoma. 25-37 for 338 yards and four td passes.
Matt Jones, QB, Arkansas. Jones did it on the ground and in the air in the Hogs’ upset win over Texas. He was 8-16 for 139 yards and a score, but added 102 yards on just 12 carries.
Eli Manning, QB, Mississippi. Sure it was against Louisiana-Monroe, but Manning was 22-26 for 352 yards and three TDs. He also ran one in.
